If A Ten-Year-Old Can Do It, You Can!!!

By: Yank Elliott, MBA

A young man in Hyde County, NC, wanted a fancy ATV. His parents said "O.K., you figure how to buy it".

He was 10 years old.

So Chris started a roadside stand selling fresh fruits and vegetables to travelers on the way to the Outer Banks. Problem was they were in a hurry going to the beach, then in a hurry to get home. No time for vegetables.

He still made enough to buy his ATV.

Not satisfied with his original business Chris began selling to grocery stores and restaurants. That strategy worked much better.

As the business grew he needed a couple of trucks and a few helpers. Storage required a building and volume was too great for local suppliers. Weekly trips had to be made to the Farmers' Market in Raleigh far away from Hyde County.

His customers love the service and the business is growing in an area where there isn't any business. And Chris owns none of his vehicles nor can he drive. The storage building is his but he doesn't have title to it.

He's only 14!

This story shows that if you find a niche and fill it well with determined effort and a goal to meet you'll succeed whether you're 10 or 90. You don't even need any business training; just do it.

And oh yes, flexibility is a must; business plans must often change as you learn.

HOME BASED BUSINESS IDEA SUCCESS STORY:

By: Yank Elliott, MBA

On March 20, 2004, CNN reported the untimely death of Brian Maxwell. Maxwell was a former No. 3 Marathon runner who, with his wife, founded the PowerBar company in their kitchen.

Maxwell conceived the energy bar when he was forced to drop out of a race. It is thought the body quits using carbohydrates at a certain point and begins to burn muscle. PowerBar was intended to help overcome this kind of obstacle for athletes.

This was a very successful home based startup; Nestle SA bought the company in 2000 reportedly for about $375 million. Not bad for the kitchen.

The Maxwells found a niche market and filled the need.

Everyone has this opportunity. You just have to try.
